Earlier this year, the City of Guelph Recreation Department submitted a grant application through the New Horizons for Seniors Grant for our proposed Bike Wise program and have been notified that we have been successful in our ask. The goal outlined in the grant application is to create opportunities for seniors in Guelph to do everything from learn how to ride a bike, rebuild confidence in riding ability, explore trail riding and road riding within the community, learn the rules of road riding as well as how to repair and care for a bike. Safety and the importance of active transportation will be a large part of the curriculum.

The program will have no cost access to high stability, easy to mount bikes and trikes. So far, we have purchased 4 low step bikes, 2 trikes and 2 more comfortable bikes with a wider seat and larger wheels. Our goal is to be fully inclusive to any and all who would like to enjoy cycling in our community!

In addition to the bikes, we will also be purchasing two bike maintenance stations to be permanently fixed to the outside of both the Evergreen Seniors Centre and West End Recreation Centre (both registered Seniors Active Living Centers) properties for communal use.
